"What can we do to halt this problem?"--Well, it's not really a problem since a frozen planet wouldn't be much fun.

Warming of the globe is caused by a number of things:

- Greenhouse gases.

- Sunspot activity.

- Changes in the earth's orbit.

- Increase in dark surfaces (which absorb heat).

We can't alter the orbit or sun activity, but we can alter greenhouse gas levels and urban development.

You can't "halt" global warming (or cooling), as the earth has been warming and cooling for millions of years. All you can do is attempt to limit the effects of it so as to not make the planet too uninhabitable, and to also prepare the human body for changes in climate, and subsequent changes to resource supplies, and human welfare.

I have to say that I agree with the first couple of answers.  I'm all for the environment, but this is not about the environment and is all a fraud.

The 'problem' of GW is caused by political hot air.

GW is a natural function of the planet. AGW is political posturing. How do you think people knew there was  a Northwest Passage 1000 years ago??? Vikings USED it to found colonies in Newfoundland!

And there were no SUV's or oil fired power plants back then!

When you drive your car, you burn gasoline, poisonous gases carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide are released into the air that causes global warming.  

You can reduce it by not using your car often which isn't practical obviously, so scientists would have to keep looking for other fuels that don't pollute the air when they burn.

The fossil fuel / CO2 business is government propaganda. They want to increase their control and ration fuel now that it is getting scarcer. So they have cooked up the greenhouse gas theory.

There are MANY scientists that do not subscribe to this theory, but it is being pushed by those in power and their tame press and TV networks.

Recent studies using high altitude balloon and satellite telemetry have shown that the greenhouse gas theory is not true.

If gases were causing the warming, according to the theory, then the atmosphere should be warming faster than the land and the sea. This is NOT the case - everything is warming at the same rate.

This indicates that the warming is being caused by fluctuation in the Sun's output, which has happened from time to time in the distant past.

1000 years ago when the Vikings landed on what is now barren and cold Newfoundland, they found a semi-tropical climate covered with lush vegetation and they called it Vineland.

Astronomers have noted that other planets in our Solar System are warming up too. The polar caps on Mars are visibly shrinking as they melt. This could not be caused by anything people are doing on Earth.

We cannot halt this problem. Our use of fossil fuels does contribute to the problem, but only slightly. If everyone on the planet stopped burning everything today it would only have a very slight slowing effect on the temperature increase. The amount it would slow would not be worth all of the disruption.

So what we can do is learn to adapt to these changing conditions - prepare for higher temperatures and more rainfall, higher sea levels etc. because it IS going to happen regardless of what anyone does.

So don't believe the crock of propaganda that they are trying to use on us.

Global Warming is caused by the IPCC and Al Gore deliberately tainting and massaging the data to make it look like it is warming. In the old days, we called that "lying".
