Question:

Global warming will make few coastal cities sink into the sea. Mumbai is one of them.?

Since sea around Mumbai is hardly 10 feet low below the land chances are good that Mumbai will sink within 50 years into the sea. Any idea, view, suggestion or comment to save this land occupied by more than 16 million citizen, and being the hub of India`s Economic, Finacial , and Commercial center of India. If Mumbai since, India sinks also. Bye Bye India [after 50 years from now].

  1. Well, the fastest seal level rise is around 3mm per year. Given this rate, they have some time. Ten feet equals 3,048 mm. At 3 mm per year, they will have 1,016 years before being washed out to sea. Let's hope they can grab the family dog before it becomes shark bait.

And of course this assumes the rate does not slow, which is probable since the ocean has been cooling in recent years.

  2. It depends on Mumbai's sea level. If its in a coastal area and less than 5 feet above sea level and assuming AGW is happening, that city should be covered in water within 50 years. But it's only by a few inches. A 5 inch wall high will take care of that lol.

  3. They better start moving now.  Maybe they can build canals to get around, or a d**e.  The article I found said it was about 10 meters above sea-level and water is raising at a rate of 1.2mm yearly, that gives them only 833 before they are at sea-level, I wonder where the article got the 50 info from?  Oh yeah they are the media, they do this stuff to sell stories all the time. Well if it does go under it would probably be OK for the world since India is one of the big polluters.

  4. Is the sea rising or is the land sinking?

  5. Sea level is only set to rise 24in by the end of the century, IPCC esitmate.

I think 'excelinlife' answer is quite good, people who don't understand physics should still be allowed to comment.

Or in terms he might understand better

    'Land flotin is bull c**p'

  6. I think you've been reading too many science fiction stories.

  7. With so much as stake for the country, perhaps India should rethink their plan to build $2000 cars so their residents can dramatically increase fossil fuel usage:

Time runs out for islanders on global warming's front line

Rising sea levels threaten to flood many of the islands in the fertile Ganges delta, leading to an environmental disaster and a refugee crisis for India and Bangladesh

If they can't see by now that they can't afford to be sitting on the sidelines waiting for everyone else in the world to cut emissions to save their cities and residents, then there's not much we can do for them.  The same goes for China, and the cities of Shanghai and Beijing.

Humans all over the world are going to be challenged by this issue and no one is going to ride in on a white horse and save them.  Everyone needs to pitch in to save themselves.

The 16 million people of Mumbai can move to higher ground as the ocean levels rise.  Meanwhile it might be prudent for them to stop building coal power plants to run call centers and pharmaceutical manufacturing plants for developed countries.

I haven't seen any estimates that seas could rise 10 feet in 50 years, but we're in uncharted territory so I suppose we could cross some "tipping point" such as ocean methane release that could further accelerate Greenland and Antarctic melt and allow storm surges to reach close to Mumbai's elevation.

Personally I think that within 20 years things will be bad enough that residents of developed nations will be strongly urging their governments to withhold aid from any countries that were not on board carbon emission reduction plans for the past 20 years, and 10 to 20 years after that it'll be so much worse that the pressure will be to bomb any remaining operating coal plants on the planet.  "Bomb them back to the Stone Age" will be a standard goal of war, not just a catchy patriotic slogan.

  8. bull c**p matey nasa studies have actuall show the land to be floating, do this test get a glass of water put ice in it wait till it melts now lets see if your glass over flows HAHAHA!!
