  1. Phew- tons of info on this subject. Ready?

Globalization is the dissemination of western culture and northern modernity. the movement of ideas, goods, and services across boundaries. the transversing of these goods have multiple impacts.

1st specialization - an economic term, each region, country will specialize in the goods and services they perform best. this is part of the marginal propensity to consume - in other woods if you are better at growing bananas than oranges you are going to grow just bananas and trade for oranges. evidence of this is China - offers cheap labor so we exploit it and trade. However globalization also leads to the high desire of commodities which can have adverse social ramifications- like sweatshops.

In Abu Dhabi we see that globalization is working and linking cultures together which promotes capital and wealth. also has lead to a cultural understanding, the emerging culture clash in Abu Dhabi leads to hybridization - Arab's wearing Dishdasha's driving Mercedes Benz is a good example of hybridization- which is neither good or bad. However, corruption can occur as we have seen in nearby Dubai - Dubai is struggling with crime and corruption which seems to correlate with the presence of globalization and westerners. Globalization can be a corrupting force if not kept in check - the primary vehicle of globalization is northern modernity. the good part is it can work and promote stability and foster cultural understanding - but most likely it will dissolve culture.

  2. You could microscope into this question and look at the affect nafta has had on the world, the short term gains for the US was an inflood of cheap material goods and electronics. The short term gain for other countries was hastened development and commerce. The long term losses for the US includes a loss of jobs for people and less vigorous (more dependent) economy. And I do not know of losses for other countries.

  3. Globalisation has a polarising effect. On the one hand, globalisation enables the exchange of technology and information so that no matter where in the world you are, you never feel cut off from civilisation as you know it. It forces people to learn about cultures different to their own, because it could have an impact on their life. I would say the large scale impacts include: more awareness of the environment, forcing us to learn about laws different to our own that may offend our moral principles, such as whaling. It forces people to question their views, as regard to the political system in their country, for instance.

On the other hand, globalisation causes a 'flattening' of the world, so that everywhere seems more or less the same, e.g. Starbucks, McDonalds culture etc. People lose their cultural identity, their ties to their land and have the sense of being 'invaded' by foreign companies that seem to put profit before people.

With regard to places, globalisation is responsible for the increasing numbers of holidaymakers who may buy second homes in seemingly idyllic places which soon turn into tourist traps and drive the property prices up so that the locals are forced to move elsewhere. Such places rely on tourism to such an extent that local industry (apart from hotels, restaurants etc) all but disappears.

Globalisation is neither good nor bad, in my opinion. Some people profit from it, others aren't so lucky.
