Glock 17 v. Taurus PT 24/7 Pro 9mm?

I'm looking into purchasing my first pistol, and I've narrowed it down to one of these two pistols. I'll be 21 in August, and as such, will be on a budget, but still don't want to get a crappy weapon.

Since it will be my first gun, I want one with good ergonomics, so it will be comfortable. I also want a gun with low recoil, so I can build confidence while I'm learning (these are both 9mm, so I don't think that will be a problem?).

From everything I read, the Glock 17 is very reliable, and can stand up to a lot. I've been able to handle it, and it feels OK, although I don't like the location of the mag release, or the lack of an external safety. I can get this Glock for $499.

The Taurus, on the other hand, is extremely comfortable, and I like the feel of everything on it. My concern is durability. I've read that it's quite good (NRA handgun of the year), but it doesn't have the aura surrounding it like Glock does. It costs $349.

If the Taurus is just as durable, should I get it?

  1. I just got myself a Taurus 24/7 Pro/compact 9mm a few days ago. I absolutely love it! It's a great SD/HD nightstand gun, also great for conceal carry. It's only 22 ounces! I'm a novice shooter, and a swiss-cheesed my first silhouette target at the indoor range, with nice tight groupings. And I have mild spastic cerebral palsy. But maybe I'm a natural - who knows :). Did you shoot the 24/7 pro yet? My compact version has a pretty heavy kick to it, because of its light weight and size. But i like that about it, it's great for CCW. The regular 24/7 has a long slide, and is a bit heavier. I suggest trying the compact.

I'd say save the spare $150 for your next gun. This one won't be your last. My first was a Ruger GP100 4" .357 mag. Not exactly a practical SD/CCW gun, but who cares. It's still s**y. Next, I am saving up for a Kimber.

BTW, not the only did the 24/7 win NRA Handgun of the Year. The US Navy Seals switched their standard issue 1911 to the 24/7 Pro in .40 cal from the H&K USP .40.

  2. Lack of external safety on the Glock???  It DOES have an external safety, the small lever just ahead of the trigger.  A Glock will not discharge until this lever has been depressed.  This is why Glocks don't go off accidently when dropped.  Try that with a 1911 even with the dubious grip safety.  Try that with a revolver.

I'd pick a Glock, period.  Just keep your finger outta the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot.  Carry in a holster that covers the trigger.  Under no circumstances throw a loaded Glock into a purse, pocket or drawer full of clutter unless it it secured in a holster that does cover the trigger.  How hard is that?
