Gloucester undecided on a new coach – Rugby News Update
Bryan Redpath, the former Head Coach of Gloucester, left the club last month citing sporting reasons for his exit, while the rumour mill suggested the former Scotland international was to take up the vacant Director of Rugby position at Sale Sharks’.
Since his departure, Gloucester has been looking for a replacement with various sources claiming that the club have found their man. However, Ryan Walkinshaw was quick to quash any rumours, saying that nothing has been finalised as yet by the club.
"We've had more than 30 CVs now, and we have a shortlist of 12," Walkinshaw told the
Gloucester Citizen. "The standard of applicants has been very high, and in terms of those we have not shortlisted, that has nothing to do with their credentials. It is just that they are not the right people for the job, or the right people to coach
at Gloucester.”
However, the Daily Telegraph had reported that Sean Holley, the former Osprey boss was in line to replace Redpath, while the Rugby Paper had put forward the name of John Brain, as the person to be at the forefront. The paper also suggested he was the choice
of board member Ryan Walkinshaw.
Walkinshaw further clarified the position of the club, saying that they have done their research on the candidates and can start the interview process now.
He said, "I think it is important to reiterate we have made no decisions whatsoever. The interviews are only just starting - we made a point of waiting until the end of the season...”
Redpath had been elevated to his current position in 2009 after Dean Ryan left his post. In the 2009-10 season, he was able to guide the club to a respectable 7th place finish, although the season saw the death of Tom Walkinshaw, a long-term owner
of the club. The 2010-11 season was better for the coach, as his team finished third in the Premiership and won the Anglo-Welsh Cup along the way.
Any new coach that comes in to replace Redpath would have a massive task in front of them to achieve the desired results.
