Worcestershire 144/7 (40/40 ov) – Gloucestershire won the toss and chose to field
Tuesday July 17: In Group A match of the ongoing Clydesdale Bank 40 tournament, Worcestershire managed to post a meagre total of 144 runs for the loss of seven wickets in 40 overs against Gloucestershire, at College Ground, Cheltenham.
Gloucestershire on winning the toss, put their opposition into bat, and the bowlers responded well to the call of their skipper by nabbing the first wicket before conceding a run, as Worcestershire opener, MM Ali, walked all the way back to the pavilion without troubling a scorers.
With the first wicket down on the first delivery of the match, things looked to have gone awry for Worcestershire right from the start.
The pair of opener VS Solanki and number-three batsman PJ Hughes could muster only 17 runs, before Solanki was removed by LC Norwell, after having jabbed an innings of 13 runs off 31 deliveries.
The slow paced innings by Solanki created pressure on the rest of the batting line-up, who now had to pace up the innings by taking a few risks.
This was exactly what the fielding side was expecting and the gamble worked as they grabbed their third wicket with 21 runs on the board, as JG Cameron was caught behind by wicketkeeper Batty off the bowling of Norwell.
Skipper DKH http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mitchell-c76390 then joined Hughes and tried to halt the bowling onslaught, but after steering the team to a tally of 48, it was time for Mitchell to hit the showers after he had amassed an innings of 11 runs.
The slow pace of the innings and the constant demise of wickets created, enormous pressure on the batting side, while relieving their opponents.
With Hughes bravely holding his end, it was time for D Pinner to join the action, and the batsman did not disappoint his fans as he smashed a belligerent knock of 20 runs off 38 deliveries to give the opponents something to think about.
Nonetheless, the team failed to amass a heavy total on the board, while Hughes remained unbeaten on a nifty knock of 64 runs.
