I run to keep myself healthy. I heard that glucosamine may aid with joint health for older people. I'm still young, will it help protect my knees?

  1. Yes, but I would seek out an all natural supplement without any artificial additives.  The one I recommend is Joint Health Complex.  Ingredients are:  1,500 mg of Glucosamine hydrochloride, plus cat's claw extract, zinc, copper, manganese, and boron.  It supports the body's gradual ability to build cartilage, sooth and lubricate joints, and help improve overall joint function.  My nephew "swears" by this supplement.

  2. There are different things you need to look at prior to taking glucosamine to help with your joints.  According to wikipedia, some sources for glucosamine are shellfish and if you're allergic you might want to see if the supplements are safe for you.  It also is an anti-inflammatory and might help rebuild cartiliage.  I have provided some links to learn more about glucosamine and find out more information about supplements that may help your joints.

  3. The best thing you can do to protect your knees is to wear good, supportive running shoes and run on a dirt track - not concrete.  Most long-distance, marathon runners that I have known have developed either knee or hip problems later in life; not so with just the 3 - 6 mile runs a couple of times / week.  There have been a few studies that have concluded that Glucosamine increases cholesterol levels which is enough to keep me from taking it; and I am at an age where such a supplement might be beneficial.  So, prevention is the best method to protect your joints - imo.
