Go Soeda edges past Chieh-Fu Wang into second round – Toyota Challenger 2011
Top seeded local tennis hero, Go Soeda dominated in two sets’ tie breaker to tumble over the Taiwanese qualifier Chieh-Fu Wang in straight sets at the Dunlop World Challenge 2011, an ATP Challenger Tour event taking place on the
carpet courts in Toyota, Japan. He registered a 7-6(4), 7-6(5) success over the 18-year-old Taiwanese to advance into the second round on Monday.
Ranked 117th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Soeda put up a solid display of tennis skills and abilities to stomp over the Taiwanese teenager, ranked almost seven hundred points below him, on their
first encounter.
The high flying Japanese confidently entered the carpet courts and held his opening serve. He maintained consistency in his games and swiftly held remaining serves by brushing off all breakpoints faced. However, Soeda failed to
convert any breakpoint opportunity to his advantage and dragged the set to a tie-breaker. He was all over the court in it and subsequently clinched the opener with a 7-6(4) win.
27-year-old Soeda kept momentum sailing into the final set. He exchanged a break and defended many breakpoints to keep the remaining serves comfortably. The set went to a tie-breaker where the Japanese outclassed the Taiwanese
youngster and bagged the set with a 7-6(5) win.
Overall, the Japanese veteran clobbered a better first serve share and registered an impressive stats on it. He also spilled fewer errors and capitalised on the several unforced errors Wang committed.
Soeda had an amazing season so far as he made a last four appearance in Singapore at the start of the season. His form slightly dipped afterwards but he shined again in Kyoto in March, making another semi-final showing. In the
same month, the Japanese cruised his way to triumph a title in Pingguo Challenger after trashing German Mathias Bachinger in straight sets in the title-round. His impressive run of form continued in Busan, making another semi-final berth before falling to
a four match losing streak.
The Japanese re-ignited his form in July where he lifted another title in Wuhai (defeating Raven Klaasen in the final round). He then made last eight appearances at Bangkok and Loughborough before entering this event.
Wang on the other side fought back hard and was levelled with the Japanese. However, he prevailed in the tie-breakers, eventually exiting from the tournament with disappointment. He also extended his losing streak, lowering his
confidence for future matches as well.
Next up for the highest ranked player of the tournament is the winner of the match between Taiwanese Chen Ti and South Korean Daniel Yoo.
