Go Soeda upsets Tobias Kamke in second round – PTT Thailand Open 2011
Japanese qualifier, Go Soeda, won his encounter against the German competitor, Tobias Kamke, in the quarter-final round of the PTT Thailand Open on Thursday afternoon.
The contest was staged on the indoor hard courts of the Impact Arena, in Bangkok, Thailand, with the 126th ranked Soeda winning convincingly in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6(7). Kamke hung in the matchup for one hour and thirty
two minutes before crumbling in the second set to let Soeda away with victory.
27-year-old Soeda displayed his amazing skills to make his way to the quarter-finals of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 tournament. He raced through the opening set without much difficulty but had to
work his way through the second set to clinch victory in the tie breaker round.
Both men secured 23 first serve points apiece in the matchup but Soeda bettered his opponent by nailing four out of six break points. Kamke clinched two out of four serve breaks in the contest but always remained on the back foot
in the game. He was off to a sloppy start in the first set and gave ample opportunities to his opponent to get on top of the game. Soeda stung two serve breaks in the first set and seized 12 out of 14 first serve points to wrap up the set number one at 6-2.
A more competitive second set was played between the two contestants and a trade of two serve breaks each was seen. The scores got tied at 6-6 and a tie breaker round was enforced, with Kamke labouring desperately to remain alive
in the competition. Soeda raced to 7-6(7) to conclude victory and moved into the round of eight of the tournament.
Soeda will face the unseeded American contestant, Donald Young, in the next clash to fight for a berth in the semi-finals of the PTT Thailand Open. Young made a huge upset in the second round, when he outplayed the fourth seeded
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain in three sets 6-1, 6-7(0), 7-5, to book a date with Soeda in the quarter-finals.
