Question:

Go to Work or visit New York? Need Advice!?

My family is going to New York in two weeks for my cousin's birthday. I just got a new job two weeks ago and I work Fri, Sat, and Sun. We will be going Friday and returning Sunday. So I will have to miss a week of work. I really want to stay for work but also want to go to New York. If I stay, I'll work 12 hours @ $7 per hour for the three days. I know it's not worth staying but I want to make a good impression on my boss. The ticket for me will be about $160. Please give me some advice.

  1. Go to work.  You just got the job.  NYC will wait for you.

Edit:  If your parents say you must go, then you must go.  Don't be too surprised when your employer is miffed.

  2. Stay with a friend of the family and go to work.  New York will always be there - it's a good time to learn about priorities and sacrifice.  Life is full of compromises.

  3. If your folks really want you to go, have them talk to your boss.

But tell your boss you'd rather work first.

At least then she/he'll know it wasn't you being unreliable and flaky.

If your boss doesn't understand, there are quite probably other $7/hour jobs out there.

The worst case scenario is: you go to NY, have fun, and have to find a new job when you get back. That you care about the job so much means you are a consciencous person, and will likely easily find another.

Best case scenario: you go, have fun, and have a job waiting when you get back, even if you have to prove yourself a little extra to the boss thereafter.
