Go to the works yard and get the key to the 1/4 pole?

Life on the back stretch can get boring sometimes. To shake things up we would sometimes send the green horns to get things that don't exist. My favorite was the key to the 1/4 pole but other wild goose chases included getting a bucket of blue steam and a saddle stretcher.

Know of any other race track pranks directed at those who don't know any better?

Bring us all the ice you can possible find, cuz we need it for the ice boots & our machine ain't workin!  Another good one is...Stay here & wait for the vet.  When the vet arrives, you help them hold the horse & by that time I should be back with the supplies & I'll relieve you!  No one ever comes back to relieve you...haha!  You end up sleeping in the stall because the vet never shows, but you didn't know it was a joke until the next day!  The best one that was pulled on me?  When the seasoned grooms told me, the totally green hotwalker, to remove a feed-tub that was hanging on the outside of a stall door & I did just that.  The problem should have been easy to spot, but since I had never worked with race horses, I had no idea just how hard a horse could bite!  That SOB lunged out at me & grabbed me by my stomach, picked me up off the ground & threw my as s down in the dirt just as I had unhooked the feed-tub & was moving away.  I realized I was surrounded by a really fun bunch.  To add insult to injury, I was fired the next day because I couldn't work.  I still have a lump from the tear it put in my stomach wall.  The trainer graciously gave me an extra $5 to get myself some hot tea in the kitchen & the grooms gave me a big fat bag of cocaine to help me through all the pain they had caused me!  This was my intro into the backlot.  Thanks...it taught me alot.  I lasted 5 years & the last 2 1/2 years I made it to groom.  No winners, just the ones with injuries who enjoyed my slowness & patience!

luckly I've been around the track since,i could walk so I never fell for any of the tricks, but have told some green people to do some of the things you mentioned but never anything to hurt them. we also came up with telling them to get us the bit extender.
