Question:

God, why is EVERYBODY giving their kid super weird names?

I mean seriously - it's like there are 2 choices: Kayden or Alyilya. Either you name your kid something really trendy or really unpronounceable and kind of insane.

Why are people doing this??? What ever happened to Sarah, Rachel, Anna, and Caitlin?

  1. Times change and so does fashion!! Out with the old in with the new...Loads of people have the names anna, rachel etc and some people these days still do use them but now unique and different names are been choosen to fit in with society. In ten yrs time therl be someone here asking the same question but theyl be saying whatever happen to names like Kayden and Aliya...Fashion goes round and so does names Anna will be popular again but for now unusual names are been used ..My daughters name is Kaydie how is that bad just cos it hasnt been used for years and years doesnt mean its insane. U have to roll with the times and as long as u name ur children something u like thats all that matters

  2. well Katie, Anna, Rachel, Caitlin ,Sarah....ARE ALL OUT OF STYLEEE, why would you name your kid some old timey name when you can come up with something trendy and different and not what everyone else has...

  3. Maybe it's only you that thinks they are weird.

  4. Many people choose really bizarre, weird names but they like the term "unique".

I feel that they probably have little self-esteem and want a "larger than life" memorable name for their offspring.

There's always the chance that they feel their lives are boring and filled with dead end dreams. If they give the child one of these nutso names, they can nurture the hope that at least their child might be special even if they aren't.

  5. Well I have a daughter named Rachel, AND a daughter named Salem. I honestly just like some different names and I really like the name Madeline by the way.

  6. wow thats really mean.. talk about being original.

  7. I don't know for sure - I'm guessing that the generation raised on "you can do whatever you want to do if you just set your mind to it" has decided to start naming children. I think that it is fine if you have a unique name, but if I think it's frustrating if it can't be pronounced.

  8. I think you can find nice names that are not too trendy or too common.  I had probably 3 Saras in my class in elementary school.  Having to ask which Sara all the time gets just as annoying as not being able to pronounce the name.  Still there must be some balance.

  9. Well they sound more modern and everyone else is doing it, so it won't look so weird in the future.

Trendy names don't last and always change, in a decade it will probably be some other type of names like Asian names (with Asian culture stead idly getting more popular and Asia taking over) instead of the Gaelic-based "Y"-themed names.

Bibical, traditional names will always last, becuase they always have. So don't worry, there will always be those names out there.

  10. Sarah, Rachel, Anna, and Caitlin are as out of style as Edith or Dolores.

I agree with you in the sense that names that end in "-yden" are ridiculously trendy. They're becomming unoriginal.

But it's not that big of a deal. Don't get wet yourself.

  11. I agree completely.

I am so tired of the "Ayden" names and the "Arilillybellakayla Princess" names.

Oh and i will tell you what happened to "Caitlin" it was morphed into "Kaytlynne"

  12. well Kayden and Alyilya seem okay...compared to the 13 year old girl who just had the court change her name her in New Zealand - her legal name was ' Telula does the hula from Hawaii' - no joke.  Apparently everyone called her K.

  13. Why is it not okay if someone wants to give their child a Japanese name when they aren't Japanese? Maybe they just like that name...

Who made you the name police?

  14. It's called freedom of choice !!

I prefer traditional, simple names too, but I'm not going to judge or get annoyed because someone decides to call their child 'Alyilyah'.

So what, that's their choice and more power to them for having the courage to do that !!

  15. I'm not God, But I think as you do My kids all have normal names and they are all happy with them. Humans don't want to grow up with the name Kimberella. They want to hide from society Because they are made fun of every day of their lives at school. The world is most difficult anyway without your own parent cursing you from day one with rediculous names,

  16. Sarah, Rachel, Anna and Caitlyn grew tired of having normal names and decided to rebel once they got pregnant.

    Lol, no.

People are just looking for a catchy name thats unique, something that no one else will have. That's all.

  17. well everyone says that me naming my daughter Khalela is weird, trendy and unpronouncable but they dont take into consideration that i dont live in the US, i live in Australia and i am swedish and am moving there probably in about 2 years and Khalela is a swedish name and is known over there.

my other daughters names are Deanna, Monique and Nicola.

    i agree with you though!

  18. People got bored. Plain and simple. People got bored with Mary, Sarah, Rachel, Anna, Shannon, Helen, so the made new names like Alexis, Madelyn (although wasn't it spelled Mattie before Madison and Madelyn came around?) Hannah, Lily, and so many others. These names became extremely popular. So people either give their child a popular and trendy name, or they make one up to be unique. Although sometimes people go overboard, (I've seen orangejello all the way to audioscience) and sometimes make unpronouncable (Aunshale, Clarenceneeka, Dyquesia,) or plain weird (Tadae pronounced today, Tamarra like tomorrow, Nawsia as in nausea, and so much more). I get what you mean, but not everyone does this. There is a wide variety nowadays, and when it comes down to it it really is the personality that counts. And if a kid literally can't live with his or her name, thats the beauty of nicknames.

  19. What's weird to you is not weird to others.  To each their own.  It's not your problem to deal with.

  20. I think everyone is giving their kids stranger names because they want to sound unique.

They're tired of the boring old Rachel's, and Sarah's, and Anna's because everyone has those names.

(My name is Rachel and even I'm bored of it.)

People want to have more originality and not sound like everyone else, because those names are extremely common.

  21. Honestly, not only did I go to school with thirtie Sarah, Rachel and Caitlin's, but they're just hideous names. Personally I think you should have a more open mind and realize that just because people name their children something other than Brittney or Ashley or Rachel, doesn't mean they're trying to be "trendy". It means they don't want another Sarah or Rachel in the world, and they are possibly attracted to the name? Did you ever think that maybe someone liked names other than common boring names. Anyway, thanks for posting this question, it allowed me let out my thoughts and opinions.

  22. Coming from someone called "mixie."  Well they probably got tired of everyother person being named Ashley, or Rachel.  I graduated with over 14 Ashleys in ONE class.  I agree some names are ridiculous like Nevaeh, but some different ones like Kayden (which isn't really different or weird) aren't bad.  Names like that are actually becoming more popular.

EDIT: I know that Mixie is your nickname, that's why I said "someone CALLED mixie" I didn't say "someone NAMEDmixie," but either way it's still a "super weird" name.  And your welcome :)

  23. I must admit I prefer traditional names

    But

You do hear some great names on here

    (and some weird ones)

I have fell in love with many names heard on this site and everyone is entitled to freedom of choice

    xx

  24. um...CUZ WE CAN OUR KIDS ARE UNIQUE AND SHOULD HAVE UNIQE NAMES ITS OUR DESICIONS NOT YOURS GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. I think people just want to be a little more original. Some people are getting tired of those classic names. They are already so many Rachels and Sarahs in the world, why add more? Can't you name a child something a little more original? Not crazy, of course, but differant? How about Mara or Jayda?

  26. Unfortunately, it's the way the trends have gone. However, it's moreso with uneducated and lower class folk. Upper class and educated people tend to choose unusual and historical names. Beatrice, Eleanor, Oliver, and Sebastian have all come back into fashion in some circles, and those kids are toddlers. Now, it's Daphne and Hugo for the newborns. I think that it's cool that we have the freedom to name our children what we want, but some people abuse that right. That's why I'm choosing to name my son (who's due in December) James Kenneth, not Jayedienn Krruzze or something bizarre. I would have like to use a name that was more adventurous, like Gideon or Hugo or Declan, but those are real names with history and culture and strength, not a random mashup of syllables.
