God gave all men all earth to love?

"God gave all men all earth to love,

But since our hearts are so small,

Ordained for each one spot should prove

Beloved over all; ......."

(The opening lines of R. Kipling's Sussex by the sea.)

What do you think this means?

Should we all be concened about about all peoples in the world, and its resourses?

And is it OK for us to love one spot above all? (Our own country, our own culture?)

I would say, both, wouldn't you?

It's not much good saying we love all people, if we do nothing about trying to improve the lot of the most deprived and suffering people on earth. Is it?

Do you think that a reformed United Nations might help with this? If so, do you think you should get yourself informed about all aspects of the UN?

In the short run, do you think that achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals would go some way to help?

Are you prepared to study these Goals inside out and see if there is some small way where you could personally help?

  1. i think that aliens created humans

  2. First off, I don't believe in God. But there are certainly plenty of Bible verses that show an expectation by the deity that humans are going to take care of his creation. Not sure about other religions in terms of what they say about such.

Regardless of one's religion, I do believe we need to be concerned about all the people of our planet, as well as all of its resources. If we aren't responsible caretakers, we won't just ruin this planet for future generations -- we're ruin it for ourselves. Most people value clean water, safety, health, and the freedom to pursue happiness -- and we can't have that unless we're concerned with the whole Earth, not just our little sliver of such.

Is it OK for us to love one spot above all - our own country, our own culture? Sure. We love certain people above others. But the point is that I wouldn't want my happiness to come at the expense of others.

I'm not sure what you mean by "a reformed United Nations." I think the UN Security Council needs reforming, in terms of permanent members and the use of the veto. I think the UN peace keeper system should be done away with, since it allows countries to "hide" under the UN flag when they commit crimes. I think individual UN agencies like UNDP, UNESCO, UNIFEM, UNICEF, etc., need more freedom to hire and fire staff, more resources to do their jobs, and more reporting requirements.

Do I think people should become more informed about all aspects of the UN? Definitely. Many of the people who post about the UN here on YahooAnswers have a negligible understanding of all of the different institutions that make up the UN, how it makes decisions, what little power it has, etc.

Do I think that achievement of the MDGs would go some way to help? Ofcourse! But it will take individual involvement and activism to reach these goals -- we can't wait for governments to get around to it. Individuals have to pressure such and get active with organizations addressing such -- UN agencies, nonprofits/NGOs, universities, even for-profit businesses and corporations.

  3. Yes we need to be concerned about everything on this Planet, thats why we need a OWG don't you think Ron.. ;-)

P.S. Can you please contact me with your email addy ?

    Kind regards

    Ron D.

  4. There is no scripture that says we are to love the earth. It is hear for our use not the other way around.  The UN is filled with crp and are just looking for ways to cripple our economy.
