  1. I'm not sure that people back then had words to describe destruction besides fire.  Keep in mind the bible was written a couple thousand years ago and translated (and mistranslated) hundreds of times since then.

What you get out of it is text that's so blank you can get it to mean anything.

And, geologically speaking, a worldwide firey cataclysm could not be caused by volcanos.  They're area of impact is too small, and their formation is impossible over a vast majority of the globe.

  2. It could be fiction.

  3. Which God said that and just where and when?

The Earth has suffered many great cataclysmic events.  It is still here.  It will be long after humanity and all its Gods are gone.  Religion pertains to people, some people, not to science.  No Bible is a science book.  No Bible is a factual reference.

  4. You forgot nova bombs; an un-invented explosive that is like a hydrogen bomb to a mere atomic bomb.  Or it could mean when the sun grows into a Red Giant in 7 billion years at which time the surface of the planet would be molten.

Of course it could also be as the result of a huge asteroid strike that happens tomorrow from an as yet unseen asteroid that will make a deep water strike and ignite the large solid methane deposits that can be found in very deep water; releasing enough methane in the atmosphere to cause an explosion.

The idea behind Revelations is that you DON'T know when the end of the world will come so you had better live your life the best you can until it does happen, just in case it does happen tomorrow.

Of course this is also based on a book that said the Earth is fundamental and unmoving so I don't know just how much credit you can give the book; it is after all a simple book written by men.  The men may have been inspired by god, but unlike the 10 Commandments the bible wasn't handed to us directly from god himself/herself/itself.

And then there is the equally good chance that it is a work of fiction and allegory used to instruct people; much like Aesop's Fables.  People have no problems with those fables yet they don't seem to be insulted by the idea of animals having complex emotions and even talking to each other.

  5. I would try asking him what he meant.

  6. Different people's gods have said all kinds of different things, or so we are told.

This earth is the only one we have; let's look after it properly.

  7. The earth won't be destroyed by volcanos, but the human race could be.  There are a number of very large volcanos on the earth that have caused mass extinctions in the distant past.  None of them has erupted since people have been around, but one of them could at any time.  This is a very real threat to the human race.

Another fiery way the world could end is by impact with a large meteor.  Sooner or later this is practically inevitable, and probably more likely than volcanic eruption as the "end of the world" scenario.
