Godofredo de Oliveira takes on Rony Mariano Bezerra in featherweight final of TUF: Brazil – UFC News
Godofredo de Oliveira and Rony Mariano Bezerra, two surging Brazilian featherweight mixed martial artists, will make their Ultimate Fighting Championship debut against each other, in a three-round featherweight bout of ‘The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil’ tourney,
on UFC 147.
The two finalists will take on each other on the fight card headlined by the non-title three-round clash between Rich Franklin and Wanderlei Silva. The octagon for the showdown will be set up at Estadio Jornalista Felipe Drumond in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
The Saturday night event will be televised live on June 23, 2012 and will also witness Fabricio Werdum take on Mike Russow in a non-title heavyweight bout while constituting the co-main event.
This will be the first time that both men will enter the UFC octagon in order to prove as to who is the best featherweight. Oliveira, a Brazilian black belt jiu-jitsu, has been in a total of eight mixed martial art bouts before becoming a part of TUF, UFC’s
live mixed martial art show.
Also known as ‘Pepey’, Oliveira has won all his bouts and has nailed six of his opponents by submission and just two by knockout. A bird’s eye view of resume of both men shows that Pepey is overshadowed by his Saturday night opponent’s experience.
Mariano, also a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, has been in a total of 13 mixed martial art bouts while performing for different promotions. Also known as ‘Jason’, Mariano also relies on his ground game and has grabbed seven of his total 10 wins by making
the opponent submit.
The duo recently met at the pre-bout press conference and resolved to put forth the Brazilian fans an epic showdown. Mariano, while sharing his thoughts commented, “This is a great dream come true, and there’s no better place for this than [Belo Horizonte].
I’ve always worked hard and believed in my dream of fighting in the UFC. A samurai doesn’t go into battle without his sword, so I’m wearing my (Jason) mask.”
On the other hand, Oliveira vowed that he will give Mariano a war and stated, “It wasn’t easy making it here. God is my manager and I thank everyone who’s supported me. Jason is an excellent athlete and deserves all the applause he got from the public. It
will be a war and I will be prepared.”
The odds are in favour of Mariano who has more experience and also understands the sport of Muay Thai. Oliveira, on the contrary, will face a bit tough time as his opponent is also a submission specialist just like him and therefore a back up strategy is
a must in order to nail UFC’s Jason.
