Gods/Aliens?

Question

Is it possible that long ago extraterrestrials were miss construed as 'god(s)' to humans? It seems to me that, should a sophisticated/evolved civilization encounter a much more primitive one, the primitive one would misinterpret technology as magic/divine powers. (ie. Spanish and the Mayans)
