Goerges/ Strycova rally past Lisicki/ Stosur into the semis – Bank of the West Classic 2011
Third seeds, German Julia Goerges and Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova bounced back to overpower the German Australian team of Sabine Lisicki and Samantha Stosur in a three setter mouth watering match at the Bank of the West Classic
2011, a WTA Premier event held on the hard courts on the campus of Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, United States. They registered a 2-6, 6-4, 10-5 win over their rivals to advance into the semi-finals on Thursday.
The seeded duo displayed brilliant skills to register a comeback victory against Lisicki and Stosur in one hour and nine minutes at the Civic Auditorium in Taube Family Tennis Center.
The unseeded tandem of Lisicki and Stosur stormed into the opening set and quickly reeled off entire serves through maintaining consistency in their game. They clobbered a lower first serve share but earned a perfect win on it.
In addition to this, they faced zero breakpoint and converted two out of three breakpoint opportunities to their advantage to win the opener with a 6-2 score line.
Goerges and Strycova continued their losing ways and lost their serve to trail again. However, they hit back after breaking their opponents’ serve twice to clinch the equaliser with a 6-4 score line. The pair also produced an amazing
81 percent first serve share as compared to Lisicki and Stosur’s 48 percent and earned an impressive 73 percent win on it.
In the super tie-breaker, the German Czech tandem perfected their co-ordination and went into overdrive mode to pull out the victory with a 10-5 score line. The clobbered a fantastic first serve share of 88 percent as opposed to
their rivals’ 43 percent and registered a perfect win on it.
Goerges tweeted after the match,“ Hi all...had a nice practice in the morning and then we won a tough doubles...it was a very good level. We play the semis on Saturday. until then i will practice a lot and hard these days. trying
to improve and getting better everyday. maybe some shopping tmrw that was it for today”
The German Czech duo will next face the winner of the match between second seeds, Belorussia’s Victoria Azarenka and Russia’s Maria Kirilenko, and the Australian Russian pair of Anastasia Rodionova and Arina Rodionova.
