Goerges/Zahlavova Strycova oust Chuang/Date-Krumm in round one – Toray Pan Pacific Open 2012
German-Czech tandem, Julia Goerges and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, rallied past the wild card entrants, Taiwan’s Chia-Jung Chuang and Japan’s Kimiko Date-Krumm, in a three-set thriller at the Toray Pan Pacific Open 2012 on Tuesday. They jolted down a 6-1, 5-7, 10-5 victory against their opponents to secure a place in the quarter-finals at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Five event held in Tokyo, Japan.
The in-form junction of Goerges and Zahlavova Strycova showed superb co-operation to outclass the wild card recipients in their first encounter. After earning the success in one hour and 16 minutes, the German-Czech duo charged into the final eight at this outdoor hard court event.
Goerges and Zahlavova Strycova thundered into the Ariake Coliseum. After the wild card pair held their opening serve, the high flying German-Czech junction unleashed barrage of groundstrokes and reeled off six games in a row. They plucked their entire serves without encountering any breakpoint and cashed in half of the six break chances to pull out the opener with a breadstick.
The veterans rebounded in the proceeding set. They got the desiderated break in the opening game and jumped to a 2-0 lead. Chuang and Date-Krumm held their following serves with poise until they lost the track in the 10th game. However, they stayed focused and with another break of serve, the Taiwanese-Japanese junction sealed the equaliser by winning seven games to five.
The match could have gone in any direction but Goerges and Zahlavova Strycova re-gained their strength in the final set. They recorded a perfect first serve share and spectacularly clicked six out of seven points on it. As a result, the German-Czech tandem clinched the decider with a 10-5 score line.
All in all, Goerges and Zahlavova Strycova clobbered a better first serve share of 80 per cent as compared to their rivals’ 58 per cent and amazingly availed 33 out of 44 points on it. They sought nine break opportunities and finished the match with 67 points.
Next up for the winning tandem is the conqueror of the match between top seeds, Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova, and the wild card entrants, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Lucie Safarova.
