Goh Liu Ying, Chan Peng Soon penetrate into semi-final of Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold 2011
Malaysia’s Goh Liu Ying and Chan Peng Soon have penetrated into the Mixed Doubles semi-final after beating Thoungthongkam Saralee and Sudket Prapakamol of Thailand in the quarter-final of the Malaysia Open GP Gold 2011.
It was a classic three-set match that took 56 minutes of hard labour from both sides. Goh Liu and Chan Peng lost the opening set to the opponents after a wonderful fight. The Thai couple managed to win the first set with a wonderful score of 27-25 in 26
minutes.
In the second game, the Indonesian couple fought back in the match by playing flawless game. Goh Liu and Chan Peng remained ahead of Saralee and Sudket in the whole set and finished it by a good margin of 21-17 in 16 minutes.
In the final set of the quarter-final, the Malaysians dominated the game from the opening points. They spared no room for the opponents to score points. Their shot selection and perfect execution put the Thai couple under pressure. Goh Liu and Chan Peng
won the set by a considerable margin of 21-14 in just 14 minutes.
After winning the quarter-final against the world number two pair, Peng Soon said, “We have never done well at home. This time, we were able to show our home fans our true abilities. It feels good.”
In the semi-final match, the Malaysian couple will be up against Pia Zebadiah Bernadeth and Fran Kurniawan of Indonesia. In their previous four meetings, the Indonesians are leading by a one-sided margin of 4-0.
While talking about the poor performance against their Indonesian couple, Peng Soon said, “We lost to them in the semi-final of the India Open last week. In fact, we lost to them at home in the first round of the Malaysia Open (in January).The odds are against
us but we will go all out.”
Goh Liu and Chan Peng desperately need a title to break the deadlock as they clinched their last Mixed Doubles title in 2009 Thailand Open.
