Goh Soon Huat stuns Chong Wei Feng in Men’s Singles semi-final of the National Grand Prix Finals
Malaysia’s Goh Soon Huat showed his spirited display of quality badminton when he stunned the elite player Chong Wei Feng in the Men’s Singles semi-final of the National Grand Prix Finals, on Friday, October 14, at Juara Stadium in Malaysia.
Soon Huat played wonderful badminton against the experienced shuttler and won the battle in three games after working extra hard. Wei Feng played well and won the first set but could not make his mark over his younger team-mate as he lost the remaining two
sets.
In the first set of the match, Wei Feng was in complete control of the rallies and showed no mercy to his opponent throughout the game. His impressive smashes coupled with perfect net play spared no chance for his challenger to fight back in the opening
game. Soon Huat lost the game with a big difference of 13-21.
In the second game, Wei Feng played in the similar manner and progressed with a good pace. He was quicker in creating the gaps and executing perfect smashes to earn points. Wei Feng was leading with a convincing margin and entered in the concluding phase
of the second game. However, Soon Huat found his momentum and played phenomenal badminton to win the game with a 21-18 score.
The final set of this match was one-sided as Soon Huat played flawless game and established an early lead. He maintained the lead in the whole game and finished it with a convincing score of 21-14. The final score of this mouth-watering fight was 13-21,
21-18 and 21-14.
After the match, Soon Huat said, “It was a great feeling beating Wei Feng for the first time. In the second game, I thought I had no chance when I found myself trailing 13-17. That was when I decided to just go all out and attack. Luckily for me, it paid
off.”
He further added, “I’m really happy and excited to be in the final. I hope I can maintain this performance against Chong Wei.”
In the final match, Soon Huat will be up against the top seed and World Number One, Lee Chong Wei, who defeated Misbun Ramdan Misbun in the other semi-final.
