  1. there is always hard candy like mints, OR you could always use another chewy candy like starburst.  Also drink lots of water or fruit juice on the plane stay away from colas, coffee and tea.  Bring a book or magazine and your mp3 player.  On pleasure trips I always bring my PSP with a movie and some tunes on the memory stick and a game in the machine to pass the time away.

good luck on your trip and safe home

  2. Watch the stewards/stewardesses. The first time I flew and we hit an air pocket I almost went ballistic. I was sure an engine had failed and we were on our way down.

Since then I've realized the best indicator is the flight crew. They've been on hundreds of trips and know when is the right time to worry. Take your cues from them.

Watch what you say in the airports - some words can get you shipped straight back home. It sounds unbelievable but it's totally true.

Keep your ID handy at all times. You never know when you'll be asked for it.

Double check all your carryon luggage - nail clippers and stuff like that you've already been warned about, probably, but take *anything* with a point and put it in your checked baggage. The only exception to this would be a pen or pencil.

Also - make sure you have a bit of cash for things like snacks and vending machines. Sometimes you don't have time when switching planes to find change or an ATM and some airlines only provide snacks if you pay for them. Take along a pair of headphones for the tvs, too, otherwise they charge you for a pair.

And as a Canadian - I hope you have fun in our country and please *don't* giggle when we say 'eh' too much - we don't really notice it. :P
