  1. lightweight, waterproof, windproof pants.  Check out swix or craft.

  2. I generally wear a mid-weight fleece pair of pants with waterproof gaiters covering my lower legs and the tops of my boots. I keep Gore-Tex rain pants in my pack, but only put them on if the weather gets bad or I stop for a long break.

I generally generate a lot of body heat when I XC, so I try to avoid wearing heavy clothes.

  3. I wear an old pair of lined nylon sweats.   When it gets down to single digits, then I add a base layer under that.   You generate tons of body heat while XC skiing, so its wise to warm up first near your car/house, then shedd a layer or two as needed.

  4. anything water-resistant

  5. If you prefer to spend your time on cross country trails instead of on the alpine slopes, purchasing ski pants that are designed especially for cross country skiing is a good idea. What's the difference from downhill ski pants, though?

In reality, there isn't that big of a difference, downhill pants are looser fitting with a more rugged look and design, while cross country ski pants have a slimmer fit and are designed to allow movement that is specific to cross country skiing.

L.L. Bean is arguably the best online seller of cross country ski wear.

Avoid blue jeans and thick cotton sweat pants. Blue jeans are too tight and cold, and thick sweat pants soak up moisture from the snow as well as from your body. Better choices include synthetic track pants or full-figured work pants.

Optional, depending on the temperature - snow pants. These should be loose enough to move in and should not trap moisture near the skin.

  6. Heavy Spandex type pants. You want warmth without weight of bulk and freedom of movement. If no spandex available or on a budget sweat pants are ok but nothing binding like jeans. Have fun!

  7. Any waterproof pants you can get your hands on.  Anything else you wear will end up damp and you'll be cold and miserable.

You can usually rent them if you can't find some to borrow.  If that's out of the question buy cheap rain pants and wear sweats under them.

  8. Wear a set of loose around the legs that will breathe and let your legs move easily. Many use a short set of pants that leave the lower leg free of them and buckle just below the knee.  For your first few times any good water repellant pants that let you move freely should be OK.  Take a spare set of clothing to change into at the end of the day.
