Going Green Question: Is there an alternative to the styrofoam to go boxes.

Once a week I help feed homeless youths in my hometown. After everyone has eaten and if there is any food left over we will give out the remaining food in styrofoam to go boxes.

I was wondering if there was a green alternative for the styrofoam to go box we could use?

It would have to be sturdy enough to withstand the weight of another filled to go box stacked on top of it.

I along with nature will appreciate your help.

  1. there are biodegradable alternatives you might find some on Total Eco Store http://www.totalecostore.com they have a good selection there

  2. There are biodegradeable take-out containers available, but this doesn't mean much if they're just going to a landfill anyway, where they won't biodegrade.

As another person said, reusable containers would be best, but if they're homeless, this may not be practical either.

Sorry, there really isn't a good, affordable, practical alternative.

  3. Reduce-try the paper boxes used for Chinese carry out

Reuse- pay the kids to bring their own washable containers. Offer whatever the to-go boxes cost.

  4. yep, popcorn, I mean the real jiffy pop stuff, not the foam stuff-it works great, and is not that messy, and you can eat it after the shipment goes out...but, this is not cheap anymore, but it does work, and is completely biodegradable...
