I was thinking about my life and my likes and I was thinking of going back to school to be a grade school art teacher.

How do you become an art teacher?

What certificates do you need?

How much schooling?

Is there a program for this or is it more of a free-for-all?

I have 60 credits for digital multimedia that I can probably transfer over…

My whole family is artistically oriented and I am into clay, carving, jewelry, book binding, paper making, cloth crafts, photography... You name it, I can do it... My aunt was a teacher at the Art Institute of Chicago and is still known in her field… I picked up my love of art from her…

With my propensity for art, I would LOVE to be able to teach kids to love art as much as I do... Unlike the art teachers I had in Illinois and Arizona that took all the fun out of it and tried to make it more of a math assignment then a creative experience...

ANY pointers would be greatly appreciated!!

  1. Check with your local college counselor.  They are good about helping find out what you need to do.

I think you might be suprised by how much you will need to do though.  My daughter is also interested & was told she had to go through a bunch of classes that didn't relate to art, just general education stuff.  You know the sciences, math and english.  She just wanted to do art stuff.

    Good luck & enjoy.

  2. well, to let kids enjoy art. Think of things that the kids want to create this days. Elementary kids want to play, draw, act, sing, etc. Let them have those things as simple and challenging. Kids that ages 6-12 are probably industrial types so they like to do things, create things.......
