  1. I had a similar situation. First, explain that  you made a conscious choice to put your career on hold  to be there for your kids until preschool, that your family means a great deal to you and you felt it was the right thing to do. Next, explain that now is the time in your and your family's lives for you to continue with your career.  At this point the employer will get that you are family oriented and a person who values putting family first. That is no crime in the work place.

To reinforce the validity of your decision to continue working in the eyes of the employer you can mention things like "it is time in our lives to get ready to buy a house"  or  "we need to begin saving for college and retirement" and let them know that you and your family have decided that your building  a career that will contribute financially from this point out  is the course you have chosen.

An employer values an employee who have something specific to work for and that includes the security of your family.

  2. depending on the job and your age mention your kids, they might help if its a business management job... but no matter what stay clam. and relaxed if they want to hire you then they will, its about your credentials and your personality, be relax and polite but be yourself.
