  1. As stated above you need a passport to fly but not for a land crossing. Unfortunate since a flight is cheaper than driving and obviously considerably faster.

When I needed to fly to the States and found myself without a passport and unable to get one in time I drove to the nearest US city and then simply flew from there. You might want to look at flight from Buffalo to NYC. They should be fairly cheap and it would save you a lot of time.

  2. You may or may not need a passport depending on how you enter Canada. You don't need a passport when traveling by "LAND or SEA" (TILL JUNE 2009) You need a government issued photo ID such as a driver's license and birth certificate. You are required to hold a valid passport if you travel by AIR.

  3. As long as you are driving it is true.  If you are flying , you will need a passport to get back into the U.S.
