Going from recreational to playing some serioues matches(tennis)?

Question

I have been playing recreational tennis since May of 2007 with my dad, and some friend. I feel that i have improved nd i want to get some expericen playing actualy matches. I live in mississauga nd i want to play some tournaments, do i have to join a club to do this, or can i just pay nd get into to a certein tournament? I think im a 3.5- 4.0 level player in that rating system.
