Question:

Going from snowoarding to skiing?

I've been snowboarding for a couple years now and I'm pretty good at it. I've never skiied before and my friend is going to try and teach me tomorrow. Has anyone ever gone from snowboarding to skiing? Does knowing how to snowboard make it easier or harder to learn to ski? And finally, how easy is it to learn to ski in general?

  1. Is your friend a certified professional ski instructor?

If not, then you might as well not go.

To truly learn how to ski, you will need lessons from a professional. I know, you are trying to save a buck.

I have skied all my life, and one time I just figured that snowboarding couldn't be that much different. Holy cripes, I almost killed myself. I was a ski instructor at that time...probably a little arrogant or stupid, or whatever.

It took me 10 more years before I tried it again, but this time got a lesson. Much better!!

If you get a lesson from a pro, you will probably enjoy yourself.

If not (lesson from friend), like I said, you might as well save yourself the cost of the lift ticket and just go snowboarding instead.

  2. Oh jeeze...what is up Let It Snow's butt today?

If you have pretty good balance from 'boarding, then you should be able to pick up skiing relatively easy.

While there are a lot of differences between the two sports, they share a bunch of similarities.

If you can carve on a board, you can carve on the skis...you just have two edges now instead of one.

Stopping uses the same physical principals...you apply pressure to the edge of the skis and let them dig in.

See if you can skip the whole "snowplow" and "pizza-french fries" c**p and try to edge on your first run.

Many snowboarders seem to pick up skiing relatively quickly. I had two "1st time skiers" last year who were already good 'boarders. They picked it up relatively quickly. You should too...It's mostly balance.
