Going on a cruise from San Diego to Cabo next year. Do we need passports?

Yes - after December this year, all US citizens will be required to present their passport on re-entry into the US, regardless of where they have travelled to.

YES, you will need a passport for all types of travel outside of the US starting in January 2008.  If you go to your cruise line web site you will see that almost every line has a special notice to that effect.  Some are requiring a passport for boarding now and other will begin requiring a passport to board the ship beginning JANUARY 1, 2008.  

Passports are issued by the US Department of State. But you can get the application at your local post office.   OR, just go online to the passport office web site below to get the application and information on how to proceed. You will need two small photos to go with your application and you can usually get those at places like Wal Mart, an AAA office, some travel agencies do them and other places advertise passport photos. You can take your application to the post office or mail it to the passport office.

If you need the passport in a hurry, you can request expedited service and pay extra for the express mailings.  The normal processing time was about six weeks, but the volume of request has now extented this time frame.  However, you can request AND pay for expedited service and get your passport in a shorter time frame.

Yes!  Pre-9/11, a passport to Mexico was not needed.  Now, with tightened security everyone leaving or entering the country does even on a cruise ship.
