Going on a cruise in September

Question

I am going on a carnival cruise do you have to dress up like church clothes for dinner each night? This is my first cruise so any help would be greatly appreciated

most nights you can be pretty casual (no shorts, tanks or tee's please) ... on the formal nights church clothes or what you'd wear on New Years is totally fine and its nice to dress up

Depending on how long your cruise is, there will be 1 or 2 formal nights. Normally cruises up to 7 nights will have one formal night and cruises 8 or more will have two. The formal nights are not required but more requested. If you'd rather not dress up, you can always eat at the buffet for dinner. On these formal nights, girls normally wear a dress or pantsuit and guys wear a suit. You could go above and beyond and wear a cocktail dress or a tux, or you could simply wear a sundress or a long shirt with a collar, they want you to look nice and will still let you in if you're not dressed up super fancy. Some people go way overboard, and other people don't. It's a matter of opinion, if you'd like to dress you really fancy go ahead. If you'd rather not, you don't have to go crazy. If you don't like to dress up, you can eat at the buffet for dinner where you don't have to dress up fancy at all.

For the non-formal nights, you don't have to dress fancy. you can if you'd like but it's not required at all. Shorts, jeans, and tshirt are just not allowed. They just don't want you to look like slobs, they want you to look somewhat decent.

You dont really have to go all out every night. Just as long as you dont wear shorts in the dining room you should be fine. for men, khaki's are always good with a button up shirt or a polo. women can wear dresses, skirts, or dress pants. On formal night it's expected that you wear somethin nice though. (men-suits/tuxes women-nice dresses) They wont turn you away if you dont dress like that, but it is nice if you do. Im goin on my 3rd cruise next week!!! have fun!

The quick answer is, no you don't. Most cruise ships have informal dining and buffets where you can where your swim suit and eat on deck. However, if you want to eat dinner in the dining room there are some guidelines - much as you would expect if you were to eat at a restaurant where the bill may be $100 a plate. Shirts with collars, no flip-flops, pants or skirt, etc.

That said, there may be a formal night where the attire would be a suit / tux and a gown - check your cruise description for details.
