Question:

Going on a nile cruise?

Hubby is fulfilling a life long wish and taking me on a nile cruise. But i have a few questions.

Im form the UK... what vaccinations do i need?

One of my friends joked that travelling on the nile was silly as its literally just a queue of boats all day long - is he right?

On a cruise ship is it appropriate to wear a bikini/swim suit by the pool or should i stick to long shorts and t-shirts as its quite a conservative country.

Any other tips much appreciated!!

  1. I went on the Nile cruisein 2005 and I had to have Hepatitis A & typhoid as  a joint injection and also Diptheria/ tetanus & Polio as another joint injection.

There are lots of boats going up and down the Nile and you queue to go through the lock at Esna, but it is an amazing site seeing all the boats infront and behind you.

When you dock they dock side by side so you go through one boat to get to another but it is all part of the experience.

Yes you wear your normal swim suits or bikinis on the boat. be prepaired for your tours you need comfortable shoes, a hat preferably a wide brimmed one high factor sunscreen. and lightweiht long sleeve blouse to cover up on some of your trips.

Remember it gets very hot we went to the valley of the Kings at 7.00am and it was 40 degrees.

I am certain you will love it we did, but we were ready for the rest of going to the Red Sea for our second week.

    Have a good time.

  2. All your other answer's have covered the main points apart from the fact that all the excursions are very early in the morning because it gets so hot later on.

You require a visa to enter Egypt that you can purchase from the Egyptian Embassy in London before you go. Your tour Guide on the boat can get you one when you arrive in Egypt, slightly more expensive.

You need to be immunised against hepatitis A, polio and typhoid. We were charged £15 for these. Make sure you have them at least 6 weeks before you go so that they are effective.

Remember to take some mossi spray or insect repellent for the evenings.

You and your husband need to remember to take a hat, it gets hot enough to melt your brain and as you're from the UK, you're definitely not used to it.

If you get the chance, do the trip to Abbu Simnel. the flight over the desert in the morning is memorable, as is the temple, mainly because of the engineering feat of moving it out of the water, rebuilding it and  replacing it in exactly the same orientation as originally.

Enjoy your trip, it is really fantastic.

  3. my sister went to Eygpt but didnt do the Nile cruise although she did have to cross it in order to get someware and she said it was disgusting and full of rubbish and waste !!

  4. We did a Nile cruise in 2005.  It was a great holiday as it mixed the sightseeing, which is truly awesome,  with lounging on the sundeck. It is no problem to wear whatever you choose on the sundeck of the boat, though you would need to be more conservative when out and about.

There were times when the boats were stacked up waiting for passage through one of the locks but for us this didn't detract from the holiday, as we were enjoying the sun.

Its advisable to be immunised against hepatitis A, polio and typhoid. You can usually make an appointment at your Doctor's surgery and have these free of charge.  But make sure you have them at least 6 weeks befoe you go so that they are effective.

Hope you have a great time.
