You can't bring knives, straight razors, fireworks, explosives, lighters, guns, blunt instruments, etc.

There are also restrictions on liquids and gels:

You usually CAN take things like nail clippers, tweezers, crochet needles, safety razors, etc on board.  Some of those items were initially restricted when security tightened up after 9/11, but they are allowed now.
