I started Prozac today and im 18. I am taking it for my anxiety and insomnia. I felt really comfortable and relieved talking to my doctor and mom about it today. It sounded very straight forward with very symptoms such as nausea. Im starting to worry alittle though because i read some sites that said "You may have thoughts about suicide when you first start taking an antidepressant, especially if you are younger than 24 years old". And some other things of that nature. Im freaked a bit because I am moody already, I dont want to become suicidal.

  1. Getting off of prozac is very difficult and the stupid quack doctors will endlessly prescribe it to you. there are so many other ways to approach anxiety. Number one everyone in this modern world has run-down adrenals. Panic attacks are releases of adrenaline but do doctors look at adrenals? NOoooooo of course not, why would they when they can prescribe you this drug after all the pharmeceutical reps spent so much time with them taking them out to lunch and educating them on it. So you have the makers of this hideous drug teaching the doctors about it. When I cleaned up my diet, all the panic attacks ended but it took me ten years to come across this common sensical answer b/c it was before google.  (check out westonaprice.org) Not only that if you asked the doctors about diet they don't even study it in school so they can't help you nor do they even believe it could help. In the meantime the doctors mindlessly prescribe these drugs so that it created a pathway in my brain that it made it almost impossible to get off. Not only that but a lot of anti-anxiety drugs are bad for your digestion and once your digesiton is gone you are screwed. Not only that but prozac reduces the number of neurotransmitters your brain makes and pounds your liver. This is poisonous drug and completely unnecessary if you are willling to look at your diet and do a little cognitive behavioral therapy. look into lucinda bassett.  Please reconsider this drug. I really think it ruined my life and it has been a nonstop struggle to recover from malpractice of the doctors of not looking at my adrenals and diet. When I was on the drugs, they could never it right so I was bouncing b/w falling asleep everywhere and you still get breakthrough anxiety anyway after the first month. I couldn't stay awake in any of my classes and being on ssris for ten years screwed up my emotional development and self-esteem. Again in the meantime what's really wrong with you gets worse. This is a total sham and should never be given as anything other than temporary fix to provide a little symptom relief until you find out what's really wrong. Not only that but if you think your insomnia is bad now, brother wait until you try to get off this.  try self-hypnosis for insomnia along with biotic's Destress or melatonin or 5 htp to name a few.  If you have anxiety there are things going on your body (and probably lifestyle) that are contributing. Go to mercola.com and read about tips for insomnia and read the book Why stomach acid is good for you.

  2. I have a friend, a psychatrist,  spent over a decade fighting FOR Prozac as a treatment modallity for his depressed patients.  The point the media neglects is that the drug is prescribed to a select market, i.e,, depression.   It would would be like reporting a high death rate among patient's taking an Alzhimers Disease drug.   Of course, it is an age related disease.  You are reporting complaints of anxiety and insomnia.  Insomnia is an indicator of depression.   I see NO REASON for someone who has insight into her problem to be concerned about a potential for suicide.  You are intelligent and have insight into your problem.  I am impressed with your family and medical support team.  Some people are of limited intelligence and Prozac may be inappropriate for that patient.  Your doctor seems competent and most of all you are "help seeking."  Of course, you are a teenager and should say "timeout" when you hear the suicide story that was started in the early 90s by a 60 Minutes CBS TV program attacking Eli Lilly Company, the maker of Prozac.  It was a cheap shot against a drug that has done so much good for many patients.  Youth is on your side. It is similar to a tennis ball.  You have a resilence in you mind function that an 80 year old lacks.  Take your lucky stars that you are not a kid with no understanding and family with no insight.  You are the exception to the rule. Good luck and do not worry about suicide. (not spell checked)

  3. I still take Prozac and it did not and has never made me suicidal or think that way.

Anyone however can think about suicide but not carry it through.

Initially, I was prescribed seroxat which DID make me agressive/worthless and mildly sucidal.

As long as you follow your GP's advice and do NOT suddenly stop everything will be fine.

It hasn't prevented me from holding down a very good job in science.

Oh and by the way don't drink with it.

It can do funny things then(mood swings in seconds which will last a while).

It takes a while to build up in the body to peak plasma concentration (3-4 weeks). That is when it starts to take effect in the brain.

Millions of people take it without problems at all.

In the back of my BNF which lists all the commonly used drugs in the UK are little yellow sheets which the GP fills in if anyone has a problem or serious side effects.

If there was a big problem the product would have been withdrawn long ,long ago.

    Take care and get well.

I dont know why its been prescribed for insomnia though !

One of the minor side effects is sleeplessness.
