Question:

Going out of state for college?

Is it the right thing to do right out of high school? Money is not much of an obstacle in my case. I got a 4 yr full tuition scholarship at a private university in KY and I also received full aid for room and board except that I have to pay for transportation and books. It would have been the same situation if I had stayed at a public state school (UTSA), but I really want to go to a private liberal arts school and that's what I got at KY. Given the opportunity, did I make the right choice to take advantage of it? Of course I'll miss home a lot, and I'll feel extremely homesick since I'm really close to my family, but would you have done the same thing? Is it worth it for personal growth?

  1. Rock on, girl.  A full-ride at a private school is no small feat.  You'd be a fool to pass on an opportunity like this. (I assume you've visited the campus already and have gotten 'the feel' it's for you.)  You've made a brave decision to go far away--and I applaud you.  I went to school far from home as well (small, private liberal arts college): and it was the best decision I ever made.

The first six months were tough.  I was terribly homesick--to the point of almost transferring back home.  However, I got involved in campus life, focused on my studies, and made life long friends--you know, really capitalized on the experience--and though I was happy to see my folks at christmas break, I couldn't wait to get back to the new home that I built all on my own.

You're about to experience the magic of being able to reinvent yourself in a million ways that would never be possible at large school... I'm so excited for you.

    Best wishes: study hard!

  2. Go, Go GO

Don't worry about the distance. I go to a small liberal arts school that's two hours from my home. My brother went to a school twenty minutes away. On average, I came home more often than my brother. Take advantage of your opportunity. If you really get homesick you can transfer. However, the experience is worth it.

  3. Yes, there's nothing wrong with the choice you made.
