In most cases they will ask for ID or proof of the birthdate.

If the party is large, and the bill is big to begin with, they may give it to you free, jsut because your party spent so much money there and they want you to come back

never had to show my id to get free dessert on my b-day at any restaurant. A lot f them are cheaping out now and just giving you some old generic vanilla ice cream with a homely candle in it thought --and if it is cake, its usually something you would never order or a simple cake thats not even on the menu. I take a pass on it in my old age. I'd rather treat myself to something decadent.
