  1. As mentioned in some previous answers you do not require a passport at present if you are travelling by land.  Presently the ID requirements require that you have a government issued photo ID such as a driver's license and an official birth certificate.  The specific requirements have been set down by the US Department of Homeland Security and refer to entrance into the US.  However similar requirements, especially for people returning to the US, are required to cross into Canada simply because you have to be able to return.  Although not required a passport is the best form of ID as it opens all forms of transportation to you.

The requirement for having a passport is set to become effective as of June 1, 2008.  Acceptable alternatives are a Passport Card, NEXUS Card, or an Enhanced Driver's License.

  2. You need one to get back into the US

  3. I live in Windsor, Ontario and cross the Windsor-Detroit border all the time.

At present, the following documentation is required for a LAND crossing:

    (1) valid government issued photo ID, such as a driver's licence, and

    (2) original birth certificate.

Not one or the other, but both.

Of course, a passport is ideal but this stipulation is not mandatory until at least June, 2009.

  4. Until summer of next year, unless they change the date again, you DO NOT need a passport to cross a US/Canadian border as an American citizen by land. You will need a government issued picture ID and an official copy of your birth certificate (they now normally ask for both) or some other proof of citizenship. A passport is required for air travel but NOT road travel at this point.
