I am going to the grocery store tomorrow and want to buy what I will need for the next week for dinner. I am on a budget and find shopping once a week with a good plan saves money. BUT, I am out of ideas. Can anyone help with recipes for some tasty but simple -tried and true - recipes for a picky family?

  3. I would make a few big meals that will last you through the week and your family can choose from them.  For example, one large meatloaf, a big pot of spaghetti, a vegetable soup with ham, lasagna, and maybe a chicken dish like breaded chicken tenders.  The soup, lasagna and spaghetti should last for at least 2-3 meals and the meatloaf and chicken tenders can be added in for the other fill in meals.  This is what I do and it saves me from cooking every night of the week which is nice since I have long work hours.  Have your side dishes ready so the family can fix their own plates.

  4. spaghetti with meat sauce

    chili

    chicken fried rice

    chicken lo mein

    hamburger w/ tomatoes & rice

    roast chicken with yellow rice

so you get a small package of regular rice.  2 lbs of hamburger (you can divide it into 3 portions), regular frozen mixed vegetables, onion (one or two should be enough) and a lb of thin spaghetti, 1 can of beans (for the chili) and store brand spaghetti sauce.  and chicken (you roast it one day, then use some of the meat for the lo mein and the fried rice.

as far as seasoning, you basically need garlic, granulated is fine, but you can get fresh which will really ramp up the taste.  small bottle of soy sauce for the lo mein and the fried rice.  chili powder & garlic for the chili.

that should get you a fresh meal for every day of the week without going over budget.  the trick is to cook with inexpensive ingredients like pasta, rice and beans.  if you aren't good with recipes, google the recipes but always remember that you can substitute regular inexpensive ingredients or completely eliminate other ingredients and it will still taste fine.

once you get the hang of this you can plan week by week or even a whole month.  then repeat the pattern from month to month.

anything leftover goes straight into the freezer for use the next time you cook or for lunches during the week. no waste.
