I'm asking this question on behalf of my friend, my friend lives in America. She is over weight and she is really self conious about her body. She does Gym in school. In gym she goes swimming, but the teacher provides the swimming costumes for everyone in the class. She is not allowed to bring in her own one. The swimming costumes that are provided are two pieces swimming costumers, she would feel much more comfortable in a one piece swinmming costume. She has the biggest size and it is still to small for her, so she feels embrassed when she goes swiming, She likes swimming but doesn't like going with her class as they make fun off her, even her teacher makes fun of her. But the question is can they make you wear a two piece swimming costume if it makes you feel uncormfortable? Also does your gym teacher have the right to weigh and measure you in front of everyone?

  1. they dont even have the right too touch u if u dont want them too

any one add me on MSN: omg1200@hotmail.co.uk

  2. She should report the teacher for sexual harrassment and for bullying and refuse to join classes where this teacher is involved.  She should take this up with the school principal first and then, if he takes no action, with the school governing body, the local education authority the health authorities and the police.  This gym teacher should be suspended from duty immediately andshould not be involved with children at all

Edit:  This answer may surprise a few who know my support for clothes free swimming; if tis was what was demanded by the school my answer would be different regarding the swimming, wearing communal swim suits or someone elses is unhygenic.  And that harrassment and bullying issues remain

  3. they cant get you to do anythink you dont want

tell ur mate to but a nice 3 mill shorty wet suit

  4. 1) I've never heard of a gym class that provides the swimsuit, that's just GROSS.

Is this a private school with a dress code? Then I assume they gave her one for only HER to use?

    2) Tell her to tell the school to take a hike if they can't provide her with a reasonably modest suit and one that fits correctly.

I find the idea of being forced to wear a more revealing suit to be rather creepy. If I were her, I'd go to mom and dad and ask them to formally complain.

  5. they dont have those rights

and if they persist she should just get a pass out of class

  6. No way would I wear a suite for swimming - I prefer to sleep on one.

Joking apart how can they expect  her to wear something that isn't her own??

  7. Riiiiiight.....

    You're asking for your "friend"...

  8. I aint American , but Human Rights man...

no she dont have to weigh ya in front of anyone,

no she doesnt have to wear a 2 piece, she can wear her own

leave the girl alone!!!..   if it consists, she should refuse to do it , until they get their act together!"!

  9. Just a couple of thoughts:-

In the land of the free, where creationism is rife and common sense frequently goes hiking the magic words seem to be "my lawyer says..."

You don't give your friends age,but

1] shops don't exchange underwear for good reasons; why should a school?

    2] inappropriate physical contact?

3] if the Pope realises that society has a problem with paedophilia why hasn't this school?

4] who washes the swimsuits? Or does the teacher take them back to the staffroom for a good sniff with the other staff?

None of the above may be constructive or helpful for which I apologize, also I have no experience of the American school system, and most of my knowledge of the American way of life and "The American Way" comes from programmes like CSI and Boston Legal but didn't Americans invent Political Correctness?

Suggest to your friend GET A LAWYER GIRL! (I think she should be able to find one to work pro bono)

  10. The teacher has absolutely no right to weigh your friend in front of everyone.  Make sure your friend understands that she should be assertive about this matter.  If she does not feel comfortable wearing a particular costume, or undergoing a procedure, NO ONE has the right to make her feel uncomfortable.  Being assertive does not mean she will have to draw more attention to herself.  She should politely but firmly let the teacher know that these are the parameters that she feels comfortable in.  No arguments.  If anyone dares to cross her on this, make sure that her or her parents writes a forceful letter letting the superior of the teacher know that she has violated her right to dignity.

  11. wow

i would be horrified if i were her

i feel so bad for her

i read this and almost couldn't believe it

is it a 'regular' school? if so, i don't see the reason for the mandated swimwear

i would get her parents involved if she's comfortable doing that? if not, she needs to speak to the teacher or go to the principal privately.

if she's in competitive swimming or something like that, i could see maybe...but this just sounds really odd all around

i hope she gets this solved soon

i cringed when i read this and i still feel yucky for her even now!

you are a good friend for trying to help out

  12. NO. She should be able to choose a one piece swimming suit and if it makes her uncomfortable, then her teacher should certainly not weigh and measure her in front of everyone. If shes a young child, get her parents to speak to the teacher. If she's older then she should speak to the teacher privately.

perhaps she could try and be a little healthier and lose weight too?

  13. No no no there is no way anyone should be made to wear someone elses costume...even if provided.

Strongest word in the free world is NO !
