Hello everyone, I am excited about my trip to Amsterdam since it's my first time I would like to know a bit more about the expenses, I will be staying there for 9 days and would like to know what is the average expending cost on food, and other things like gifts etc.. and if it's convenient to buy euros here or if it's better a visa or debit card, I would like to hear some experiences, thank you.

  1. You can use your bank card in the ATMs, if your card is ready for use abroad that is. That is the cheapest way of getting cash.

Bring your credit card if you have one. Visa and MasterCard are the most used ones.

You will not be able to use your credit card in every shop, but where they accept it, it will likely be at almost no cost.

Ask your bank and your card company how much it costs to use them in Europe. (This info is often on the websites, otherwise phone them.)

For food, you can spend rather little, like getting a loaf of bread and some spread from the supermarket, and drink tap water with it, or you can go to a restaurant for lunch and dinner.

A restaurant lunch will be from 5 Euro upward, dinner from 10 Euro upward.

You can get a very nice Indonesian/Chinese dinner for something like 20 Euro, including a drink or two.

But you can also get a dinner for more than 50 Euro, if you go to an expensive restaurant.

All restaurants have to have a menu with prices on the outside of the building, mostly you find those near the door, and it is normal to have a look to see if you like the choices and prices.

Service and tax are included in those prices, so you can work out what you are going to pay.

Often there is an English menu too, if not always next to the door.

Gifts is entirely up to you. I often get home from a travel with no gifts at all, or just a little token gift.

I also know people who did buy their loved one a ring with a diamond when in Amsterdam. That was about 500 Euro if I remember right, would be more now.

You can do the tourist tours, or you can travel by train and do your own daytrips.

Very much in the Netherlands is easy travel by train, but if you want to see several small towns, a tour can safe time. (But not money.)

Walk into the tourist office or the train station and ask.

Museums in the Netherlands cost between nothing and about 10 Euro, with a few exceptions that are more expensive.

This site has a lot of helpful info:

Follow links inside and out, for prices as well as general info, it also has a good list of Museums in Amsterdam, and a searchable map of the town.

  2. You can find set menu for about 12-13 euros, but also you can find pizzas or sandwiches cheese pie etc for about 4-5 euros. One pint of beer is 4.50 euros. If choose to go for an excursion in the country of Holland to see how they made cheese and those wooden shoes, the mills and the villages Volendam and Marken, then don't buy any souvenirs or cheese from the places they made those things.there are very expensive.it is better to buy any souvenirs from Amsterdam or from Volendam.Believe me you will spend half money may be less.

Have fun and go for this excursion in the country. It is very nice.

I can not tell you anything about exchange because in my country we use euros too.sorry
