  1. The area around the World Clock is a good place for shopping.  There's a beautiful Jewish temple downtown that makes for great photo ops, and a ton of great bars and clubs.  Berlin was a really clean place, but has a lot of grafitti.  Certain famous places you shouldn't miss are Checkpoint Charlie and the Potsdam Palace Museum.  The Berlin Wall Memorial murals are really cool, and the Brandenburg Gate is just one of those cool historical things you have to see if you go there and have your picture taken in front of it.  If you like history museums, then check out the Pergamon.  I personally recommend this crazy Irish bar in downtown Berlin named Killigan's or Kilkenny's or something like that.  They have good drink specials and attractive waitresses.  They did in 2004, anyway.  Plus they sing Irish drinking songs, usually in German, and I thought that was pretty freakin' funny.  There are a lot of things to do in the Alexanderplatz and Potsdamerplatz areas.  We actually stayed in a Comfort Inn that was right down the block from a metro stop and a great convenience store with cheap alcohol and cigarettes (not that you need to know...).  It was pretty inexpensive, and had a bowling alley on the ground floor, great beds, and a nicely tolerant staff who spoke a decent amount of english.  It's close to Alexanderplatz, the Pergamon, the Zoo, the Brandenburg Gate, and is pretty easy to get to.  It's right across from this pimp-looking building called the Die Pyramide, so if you get lost and need to ask someone directions, you can ask for the Die Pyramide and get back fairly quick.  It has shuttle service to and from the airport, free full breakfast, a bar, and phones in the lobby you can use in conjunction with a travel phone card to call back to the U.S.

  2. Pension Kleist

  3. If you look like your avatar.Lichtenberg and most of Eastberlin should be off limits for you.You could make unpleasant contact with skinheads.

Neukoelln and Kreuzberg (many Turks and Arabs) has a good graffity and hiphopscene and cheap places to stay...

  4. They have a parade for perverts and call it the "love " parade.      Oh yeah.....Rohm would love to be there .

  5. Well, the first answer maybe wasn't exactly what you wanted (and the place where they slept is in a rather dead area).

THE districts to be in Berlin are: Mitte, Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, Prenzlauer Berg. But remember, they are nearly as big as large cities on their own and have these and that areas.

Probably the best place to stay if you wanna enjoy vibrant life/nightlife is around Hackescher Markt (S Bahn station, especially on/near Oranienburger Straße) and Rosenthaler Platz (U-Bahn station) in Mitte.  Also the area around Senefelder Platz is great for goin out.

In Kreuzberg the area around Oranienstraße (don't mix it up with OranienBURGER straße mentioned above!) and Schlesisches Tor are the hot spots. In Friedrichshain the area around Simon-Dach-Straße and Boxhagener Platz; in Prenzlauer Berg the area around U-Bahn station Eberswalder Straße and the Kastanienallee.

Just don't expect to find the better clubs at first glance...

Ah, and if you're into this: The biggest g*y area is in Schoeneberg around Motzstraße.
