  1. in your pocket

  2. To bring it with you?  Most travelers these days rely mostly on credit/debit/cash cards and ATMs.

To keep it safe?  A moneybelt is one idea, easily available at travel/outdoor stores.

  3. Very carefully, and do NOT flash a lot of bills.  There are ATM's so you don't need to carry a lot of cash.  Travelers checks are not a good idea here.  They are a pain in the butt to cash, standing in long bank lines.  Take what you need for the day and lock the rest with your passport in the hotel safe.  Credit cards work in banks and major hotels but outside the major cities they are basically not accepted, and when they are a charged is added.

    Enjoy your trip.

  4. Dont bring a lot of cash, almost all places you go will take credit/ debit cards. Do bring some cash with you, exchange it in a trustworthy place (airport, hotel, bank). Do not carry all the money with you! Keep it in the hotel safe, and just take out small amounts that you need. Most places take dollars, but beware of unfavourable exchange rates.

So my advice, credit cards and colones is your best shot.
