We are going to Italy in just one week. We'd like to fly into Rome spend two days there. hop on a train overnight to Venice.. spend a day or two there then train ride over to Milan to fly back home. <<<Going on Standby list and Rome is easy to get into to but can't fly out of and Milan has open seats for us to fly back home>>>>

...

Main question is it cheaper for us to buy a one way from Rome to Venice... then a one way from Venice to Milan.. or is there some kind of pass we can get that would save us money?

  1. try these two websites:

    http://www.eurail.com/

    http://www.raileurope.com/us/index.htm?W...

  2. You're better off buying point-to-point tickets.

A pass depends on where you're from - if you're from Europe then a 2nd class interrail pass costs 109 euro to 229 euro depending on how many travel days you want (3, 4, 6, or 8) http://www.interrailnet.com/interrail_on...

If you haven't lived in Europe in the last 6 months, then there's the Eurail pass. http://www.eurail.com/eurail_italy_pass?...

If those are the only trains you'll be taking, I would go with the point to point tickets. Depending on your age, a group Eurail pass for 3 days in 2 months in Italy (2nd class) is approximatley 121 euro. You need to know that there is a supplement on the Eurostar trains, night trains, and some intercity trains (i.e., you will have to pay a small amount in addition to the pass). Point-to-point ticket prices depend on the trains, the class of service, and the fare type you can get. On the Eurostars and intercity trains, there is the standard fare and a few seats at the discounted Amica fare. Rome to Venice is 56.50 euro at the standard fare or 45.20 euro at the Amica rate for a berth in a 4 bunk compartment on the night train. Seats are even cheaper, but harder to sleep - especially if the compartment is full. You will have a supplement for this train for the reservation and the berth with either the Eurail or Interrail pass.

Venice to Milan is 25.20 standard or 20.20 Amica on the Eurostar. Again, you would have to pay a supplement for these trains for the reservation with the pass. There's also the possibility of taking regional trains without a supplement for the pass, but the point-to-point ticket price is lower too and they take somewhat longer.

Even without the supplements charged with the pass, the point-to-point tickets would be cheaper. The passes are advantageous if you do a LOT of long distance travel using the slower local trains.

You can check specific schedules & prices for Italian trains here: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

note: Amica is a discounnted fare - there are a few seats available on most Eurostar, Intercity, and night trains. It's always worth checking whether there are any seats left at this price, but they go fast.

  3. From Rome (Roma Tiburtina) to Venice you can take the train ICN "Marco Polo" that leaves at 22.50 and arrives at 5.30. If you reserve early you can get the special offer "Tariffa amica" and it costs 26,80 euros:

    http://orario.trenitalia.com/b2c/PriceRe...

From Venice to Milan a regional train ticket costs 13,75 euros (times: 5.19 - 8.50; 11.18 - 14.45; 15.18 - 18.45; 17.07 - 20.40). If you fly away at Bergamo (Orio al Serio airport), obviously you can arrive at Bergamo which is nearer to Venice than Milan!

I think it is the cheapest way, sure it is cheaper than an Interrail pass. If you don't want to waste too much money, the best way is taking cheap trains ("regionale"), or at least Intercity. You'd better avoid Eurostar, which are the fastest, but also terribly expensive.

  4. yes i think that it would be cheaper to buy a one way... for every where
