  1. If you've never been to Italy before, you've got to do the main large cities - Rome, Florence, and Venice.  But if you have time and can rent a car, I find the smaller cities/towns even better - Siena, Pienza, Montepulciano, Volterra, San Gimignano, the Cinque Terre, the various towns along the Amalfi Coast... pretty much anywhere :-)  It's a beautiful country!

    Enjoy!

  2. Lots of suggestions - but you'll have to do a bit of research on our web site.  We've written travelogues of our trips to Italy and posted them to help independent travelers like you: http://www.thetravelzine.com

    Happy travels!

  3. You'll love going to Italy. I loved it there when I went there. I suggest going to all the major cities if you can afford it. :)

  4. If you are going to Rome, see the Trevi Fountain!!! It is beautiful!!! Good choice going in October. The summers are hot and they don't use ice or have a.c in a lot of places

  5. go to this site, it has much info on it and it could help you. It's interesting.
