What are some low cost, less touristy, adventurous things to do in Jamaica? My sister and I are staying in Negril the second week of January, and we've rented a car. Although we've never been to Jamaica before we've traveled a lot and don't really want to get caught in the tourist traps. It's my 30th birthday and we'd really like to make this a memorable trip. Can anyone recommend any off the beaten path or adventurous or "do not miss!!" Jamaican activities?

  1. Right, stay with a group, tour group, it is very dangerous, but do go to the shopping areas, Dunns river falls. but NEVER alone!!!!! anywhere.

  2. A fishing/boat trip idea is hot. The rates for a half day fishing trip are fairly standard, probably starting at $350-$500 per half day. Trust me, a half day is a long time to spend fishing! you will need to get some rest afterwards.  I can put you on to some people who own lots of luxury/fishing boats if you like! There is so much fun among friends fishing and snorkeling, etc.

1b. There is a restuarant/bar somewhere in the middle of the sea off the south coast. THE PELICAN BAR. Its a few miles from land. I've only seen fabulous pictures of it. You and your friends will want to take some of these pictures yourselves! 360 degrees of sea and a bar (big enough to hold a small party) smack in the middle.

I just called a tour guide and asked them for directions! The cheapest way to get there is to drive to a place called 'Parroty Beach' where you can get fishermen to take you there.

If you have any difficulty planning your trip to Pelican Bar you can call jakes 1-876-965-3000. If you go to pelican bar from Jakes Hotel & Villas, it will cost you more though (about $35 per person), since jakes is further from pelican bar.

Alternatively, you could arrange the half day fishing trip and visit Pelican Bar as a part of your fishing trip. Email me if you need the contacts for my boating people.

Here is a picture of one of thier marinas,

  3. If you can find a local you can trust, they can show how the Jamaicans party.  We had one take us to a local party.  We were the only white people there, but it was fun.  It was in the middle of the jungle.

  4. Hire a tour guide, book it through your hotel.  It may seem inconvenient, but it is the safest way to see the island, particularly if you aren't going to 'touristy' areas.  Jamaica is generally not considered, by any travel agent,  to be very safe to go off alone in.  Have fun and good luck.

  5. Trust me, you dont want to go anywhere without a tourist group with you. The roads are horrible to drive and you will probably get raped and killed. Just being for real. Been there twice. It is a very poor country. Stay with a group. I like Dunns River Falls.

  6. ~u can go to duns river falls, but if u want 2 something les touristy try goin 2 a river instead of a beach.

~eat from stands on the side of the road instead of big fancy jamaica restaurants

~stay at a small bed and breakfast insteada of a big resort

~ shop at outdoor flea markets to find some really cool stuff

AND MOST OF ALL ENJOY YOUR TRIP! AS A JAMAICAN, I AM TELLING U NO MATTER WAT U DO U WILL HAVE FUN! AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

  7. well I'm not sure go to www.Jamica guide.com for info

  8. Don't drink the water.

  9. check out <www.tripadvisor.com>

you can read reviews of hotels, tour companies, etc from previous travelers. You can also look at traveler's pictures from their trips. There's even a forum to chat on
