I live about an hour from Lago Garda and spend a lot of time there. In some respects, it's like the Finger Lakes in New York State where I used to live. Garda is the largest and cleanest of the Italian Finger Lakes. The northern part of the Lake is surrounded by mountains; the southern part is in a flater area which is a part of the Po River Valley. The lake has a number of interesting towns around the perimeter. Each of the towns has it's own character and things to see and do. My favorites are Sirmione in the south and Malcesine, Riva del Garda and Limone on the north end of the lake.

Siroione is on a peninsula that sticks into the lake. There's a very nice castle, an interesting old town, and an extensive Roman ruin (the Grotto of Catullus). Malcesine and Limone are across the lake from each other - the streets are steep and both have interesting shops and old town. Malcesine has a very good castle with an interesting museum and a lift to the top of the mountain. Riva del Garda is on the north end of the lake - it's a bigger town.

Peschiera del Garda and Desenzano provide good access between the lake and the rest of Italy. They both are on the main train line that connects Milan, Verona, and Venice. Other towns have connections by bus to Brescia or Verona and there are ferries that run the length of the lake. Desenzano has the ruins of a Roman villa - there's not much left, but it's worth seeing.

There are some major attractions like Gardaland and a safari park in the area. There's also a waterfall park north of Verona that's interesting.

There's lots of good food. Many places feature fish from the lake, but there's also the traditional pastas and some German style foods (particularly on the north end).

We went to Riva which is on the north shore for two weeks in May last year, the scenery was magnificient with high mountains all around. Plenty of pretty walks, good bus and ferry services.  castles and natural history abounds. If you like

I would imagine its a big dent in the ground filled with water, if that helps.
