  1. Venice, Florence or Rome. Milan is not a summer city.

  2. Lake Garda and surrounds will be really hot July/August - maybe as high as 40 deg., so cities will be a tiring experience.

You can get from Lake Garda to Venice in 2 not 8 hours, but you catch the train from Desenzano not Limone - you need to get from Limone to Desenzano by road (bus) or the lake water taxi. Also, Venice will be REALLY crowded, so if you decide to go, book any tickets for things you want to see beforehand.

I wouldn't go to Milan in the summer - it will be really hot and tiring.

For a much more convenient city trip, Verona is only a short hop by train from Desenzano (about 1/2 hour). It is a really nice smallish place to walk around and you might be able to attend an open air concert in the amphitheatre - it will probably be opera, but there might be other things on as well if that doesn't take your fancy.

Otherwise, there is plenty to see and do around the lake, plenty of beach time, Gardaland, a funicular at Malcesine which takes you up Monte Baldo. You can catch the boat up and down the lake to all of the various towns.

    Have a lovely time!

  3. Ok, from Limone to Venice its an 8 hr train ride, getting the earliest train. You have to change 3 times which is going to be a hassle, if you have kids so really not worth it. If you have a car then its a 3 hr drive, or once you are on the Lake see if there any coach trips that go there. The same to Rome its a 9hr train ride or 6 in the car. I think you are better off staying around Lake Garda.  have a look at trrain times:

There is plenty to do and if its hot it will be nice (if you have kids) for them to swim in the lake.

There is a theme park at Castelnuovo del Garda. have a look:

I would say wait till you get there, and see what trips are on offer. If you are only going for a week its not very much time to see all these places. you would basically be on a train for half of your holiday.
