Going to MEPS For the Navy

I am going to MEPS for the U.S Navy this Thursday. Everything is already set up. I want to enlist but I am worried I will be away from my fiance for long periods of time(7-9 months, maybe more a year). We hve already spent tons of time apart to begin with.

I've decided that I will go to MEPS Anyways and take the ASVAB and see what job options are available. WIll I have to sign a contract if I take the ASVAB?

Also is this a good move, or should I talk to another branch?(Looking for the best interest of my relationship in an active duty service).

  1. You wont have to sign a contract until you do the oath at the end, long way from now.

Get a high score... 70-99  seriously, study too.

Im in the Navy, the rest of the branches deploy to you know where, we go for 6 months at a time when on a ship, but Im in Denver now.

Im not gonna lie, youll be gone alot if your on a boat, but you never know what your gonna get in the airforce I guess.  It all depends on your job.  Just dont pick Army or Marines.

Lots of variables, but If you need more information, just ask me.

  2. you go to MEPS and get a physical, asvab, p**s and what not then you come back at a later date to talk to a career counselor.

no matter what branch or active or not you ARE going to deploy, I talk to national guard and reserve guys that spend most of their time in iraq.

  3. The military for any young man or woman is a great ideal, Before I joined the Navy I was a long haired gun carrying street running(Chicago) punk with a fiance. And to this day I thank the Navy for making a man out of a punk. Be warned going into the Navy depending on your billet you could be out to sea 6 months out of the year at a time. Unless ya`ll bond is super tight i`ll be careful, I seen many a relationship fall apart.

The Army and Marines is ok and you can take her with you if they don`t send you to IRAQ. At this time there are fewer Air Force personnel in Iraq, If you have the smarts to get into the Air Force that's the way I would go. Good luck and god speed. USA USA USA

PS. We got married I got out after 4+years and have 2 great kids. I will never forget the great times I had oversea`s. I can say I saw the world!

  4. Okay from experience I can tell you that basic alone will be the test and yes the navy requires long deployments. I was in the army but after Basic training my girlfriend immediately broke up with me and then I was deployed over sea's. If you are in active duty you will have to live in the Barracks until you reach E-5 or Sergeant. to move to housing on base. or off base. In my opinion you cannot have a good relationship and be in the service especially now with extended tours.

  5. Go to http://www.mynavyonline.com They will help you out. Also tell you about the ratings and what is the shore/sea duty. Etc.

Asvab, anything 50 and above is good, but the line scores are what matters.

  6. When you take the ASVAB you should take a physical in the next day or so. Both together tell you what you qualify for. You will be apart from your fiance during basic training but after you go to A school then you can live together and she can be with you when you get stationed. You do not have to sign the contract or swear in if you take the ASVAB. I personally think it is a good move, once you marry your fiance and your atationed then everything is payed for by the Navy (housing, food, utilities, etc.) They dont pay car notes, phone bills, and other things of the sort. I hoped i helped and Good Luck.

By the way just because you join the Navy does not mean you will be on a boat or submarine. I have 2 friends that are in Napes, Italy right now living a very good life. Depending on how good you do in A school you can choose between select few places to deploy. If on a sub or ship then you will be gone for small bits at a time from your fiance.

  7. Okay... if she cant take the time away from you, you wont make it no matter what branch so dont sign up.

The BEST branch would be the air force. but that is ONLY if you are MARRIED. if you are NOT MARRIED it will NOT MATTER.

You do not have to sign a contract if you are taking the ASVAB, even if you do sign the contract, you do not have to leave. You are not "in" until you get on the bus for basic.
