We're taking a break in Spain next week staying in a small village just outside Marbella. We have a car for the week so travelling about will be easy. Can we have some ideas as to what places we should visit? Gibraltar is a definite but any other suggestions?

  1. Go to Rhonda (not sure about spelling) the drive up through the mountains is gorgeous and the village is beautiful. Also the Alhambra is worth checking out.

  2. Marbella is one of the Mediterranean's premier holiday resorts, However for the ultimate in coastal appeal it would be hard to beat Puerto Banus, just west of the town. This is the place to watch the world go by or window shop at one of several of the world renowned fashion houses and boutiques. The port has grown considerably over the years and now includes a casino, commercial shopping centre. See http://www.spain4uk.co.uk/places/marbell... for more details

  3. Get drunk and try to shag anything that moves. Puke in the street and sing overtly nationalistic football chants.

  4. as others say a visit to puerto buenos, just to see the boats , and have a coffee or beer in one of the harbour side cafes and watch the world go by . also benalmadena marina is well worth a visit and from there walk along the promenade towards torremolenos past all the numerous fish restaraunts.  a must though is a trip up into the mountains behind marbella to mijas, fabulous place and the views are fantastic, dont forget camera

  5. Go and see Jock in his garage, English Mobile Mechanics. He is on Discovery.

  6. If you like good house music go to Pueto de Pativo in the old town. Very cool bars, nice ppl. All of old town marbella is great. Check out Orange Square and the Castle ruins. For a drink in the afternoon go to the Libaria bar near the lighthouse. Steer clear of Puerto Banus, it's full of idiots. Good for a laugh though.

I lived in Marbella for a year, if you want to know anything else, feel free to email me mate.

  7. Puerto Banus is a must with its grand boats and yachts and also the old town of Marbella, but the restaurants and bars in this area are expensive as are the designer shops. Benalmadena Marina does not have as many big boats but the marina itself is stunning and has been awarded the best architecturally designed marina in the world many times and also has a Sea-life centre a Mississippi steamboat and lots of inexpensive shops. If you go to either take some bread with you to feed the fish, they are enormous and climb over each other to get to it. From Puerto Banus, Fuengirola and Benalmadena you can book a boat trip to see the dolphins and from Fuengirola there is a ferry to Benalmadena which is cheap and a nice way to see the coastline. Also your hotel will probably run day trips to Ronda which has the oldest bullring in Spain, Mijas which has stunning views of the whole coastline and where burros (donkeys) are official taxies. The Crocodile park at Torremolinos. Gibralta and Morroco could also be an option for you. www.surinenglish.com is the most widespread free English newspaper over here and always runs adds for trips and local events etc.You will find it with other newspapers in local bars or petrol stations. Look out for the blanket trip which is free, it takes you inland to a specialist wollen shop and then on to a typical Spanish venta for lunch.

One bar that I can reccommend in Marbella, its on the Golden Mile actually on the beach where they cook sardines outside over hot coals and its called Bar Red and run by a lovely Argentinian family. I think that they shut though at night at this time of year.

If you can hire a car then Spain is your oyster and no matter where you go the Spanish and the English are usually very friendly and helpful.

I'm sure you will have a great time, if you need any more help or advice email me at yahoo I only live 20mins from Marbella
