Hello! I am so excited about finially going to new zealand in two weeks! It took me forever to save the money. So will I have to show proof of funds? I'll only have about $500 and I think I read you have to have $700. I am staying with a friend, so I don't need hotel money. Does this make a difference? Also I would love anything I should know before going that I've might have missed! Thank-you so much!

  1. Some things you should know:

-You have a long flight ahead of you.

-There are more sheep than people in NZ

-Kiwis don't get along with Aussies (actually, the other way around - Kiwis are great folks)

-You might want more money than that for the exchange rate; the dollar is a mess, and I don't know about NZ's economy, but usually anyone else is better than the states, assuming that's where you're coming from

  2. I would check out the webiste to see as there are pretty strict entry requirments ( especially for biosecurity) ...but I would take as much doculements as you can and info....something like an e-mail copy of from you friend saying you can stay at their place.

  3. that is so great im so sure u goina love it here u can take 500 aslong as u write it down and u explain ur reason and have proof that u are staying with ur friend

  4. Depends on whether you are referring to $500 American, or Australian or New Zealand. I believe you have to have enough for the fare home so if you have a return ticket it might not be so much. Your American or Australian dollar will be worth more here - but you may know that already.

But I think this is only if you are coming to work here - I don't think there are fund issues if it is a holiday.

You are coming at the best time of year - weatherwise.

Noticed your previous questions say you are worried about flying. My daughter is the same but she made it to UK and also America and has got over the fear quite a bit. She's a severe asthmatic but flying had no affect on that. She used to be terrible about flying. You will be fine! Have a wonderful trip and time here - as I'm sure you will.

  5. I am not aware of any specific financial minimums when travelling to New Zealand.  I know that you have to declare it if you bring more than $10,000 into the country.  You will also require the address where you are staying as it will have to stated on the documents you will fill out on the plane before you land.  You may want to try the Tourism New Zealand website, the one I have is http://www.newzealand.com/Canada/ however I am sure there are ones for people from other countries as well.

At present the NZ $ is worth less than the US/Canadian so you will probably have around $600 NZ.  Do not exchange your money anywhere other than a bank if possible as they give the best rates.  You can either purchase NZ currency here before you leave or carry travellers cheques and exchange it over there.  I always try to bring a bit of currency with me in case you cannot exchange any immediately.  Banks here offer it as well as NZ currency travellers cheques however there may be a delay in receiving it as they often have to order it so you should check as soon as possible.

New Zealand is a wonderful country and I have enjoyed several trips there.  Since you are staying with a friend there I am sure they will be able to show you around and make recommendations for things to do.  There is a lot from clubs to white water rafting.  I would suggest taking time to learn a bit about the Maori culture if at all possible.

The fiilght to NZ is about 12 hours so be prepared for it.  Take along a book and try to adjust your sleeping to NZ time.  Remember that it will take you "2 days" to get there (since you cross the international date line) and less than "1 day" to get back.  Enjoy yourself there, it has been a while since I made it there and probably will be a bit longer before I make it back.
