Going to Paris for the first time for 4 days, what area of the city should I stay in?

The Marais. Its very bohemian, sultry, romantic, with tiny winding streets with great food. have fun!

for a short trip if you don't want to spend too much money try some others arrondissement that are cheaper such as the 12th or the 15th. Everywhere within 500 meters you can find a subway stop and then you can be anywhere you want inside Paris in 30 minutes max.

1st Arrondissement is the area near the Louvre from Boulevard de la Madeleine to Blvd.  de Sebastopol There are some nice hotels in that area in the middle price range.

2nd Arrondissement is just behind it Rue de la Paix to Blvd. de Sebastopol. Also good.

4th. Arrondissement is the area around the City Hall ((Hotel de Ville) Also OK.

5th. Arrondissement is the "Boul' Mich" Area on the left Bank, also a good tourist area with nice little hotels.

6th. Arrondissement is the area on the left bank around the Luxembourg gardens, also nice..

7th. Arrondissement is the left bank area behind the Eiffel Tower. Not bad either, a bit more chic.

8th. Arrondissement is the area around the Champs Elysées... Excellent, but more expensive for lodginggs.

16th. Arrondissement (Passy) is the area from the Arc de Triomphe south on the right bank across from the Eiffel Tower...also great but expensive for lodgings.

I would choose the 1st. 2nd or 5th. for a medium sized budget...the 8th. or 16th. for a higher one....

The 4th, 5th and 6th arrondissements are generally the best for tourists, especially young tourists.
